Description
Master weaver Linda Beiler helps students explore the history, technique, and art of wheat weaving around the world. A member of the PA Guild of Craftsmen, Linda reveals how contemporary straw artists have turned an ancient craft into a unique art form. Students learn how to work with wheat, and work on individual and group projects.
The sphere pictured above was made by grades 1 & 2 at a school. They made paper from wheat straw and cut the handmade paper into shapes, which they then skewered and assembled into this sphere. The sphere is permanently installed in one of their stairwells.

Wheat Weaving was definitely a unique and interesting experience. Our campers really enjoyed learning a new skill. When Ms. Bieler brought out her display boards, samples and materials, they became interested very quickly and wanted to learn to make everything they saw. ....our theme for this session was "Agriculture" and I really wanted to find something fun and interesting that related to what we were learning about. We were all pleasantly surprised with how much the kids enjoyed it. They were all so proud of themselves after completing their projects. Ms. Beiler was very kind, encouraging and patient. Wheat Weaving was a great addition to our "Fabulous Friday," and we will be considering it and similar programs in the future.
